Welcome to our Blog!

With the start of the 2008-2009 school year begins the fourth year of Skagway High School's DDF team. For three years, dedicated coaches and students have put much time and energy into developing, and gaining community support of the program and that work has paid off! For the first time, a DDF tournament will be hosted in Skagway, this February. It is an event that will require a lot of cooperation, so if you have a free hand, Skagway School would love the help! The team has also chosen to adopt a global initiative for the year 'Climate Change'.

The Climate Change Initiative

In DDF, students learn how to look critically at information presented to them, consider both sides of an argument, and organize their thoughts so that they are definate and clear to an audience. They are becoming equipped with skills that can help them defend, persuade, and lead.

Skagway School's moto for the 2008-2009 school year is '
Future Leaders For Positive Change' So, let us start putting these abilities to work! Let us start applying our skills outside the perimeters of competition.

This year, the Skagway DDF team has adopted the theme 'Global Climate Change'. Evidence that human activity is impacting Earth's climate is now undeniable. After conducting thorough research on different aspects of climate change, its causes, its affects, and potential solutions, each student will be developing related individual or group projects. Hopefully Skagway will be a leader in inspiring other Alaska teams to adopt such initiatives, inspiring more young people to become leaders for positive change.

Here is a link to NASA's 'Earth's Observatory' website, a great starting point for educating yourself on our planet and it's increasing temperature. For Skagway Residents, the Klondike Goldrush National Historical Park visitor center has brochures available on how climate change is affecting National Park lands. A list of blogs, journals, and news articles related to climate change will be maintained on this page as well.
